3D display technology is planned for kiosk and digital signage deployments later this year, and reports today indicate it could also come to home computing in a similar timeframe.
Japan Today reports that NEC this week unveiled a prototype of a 3D capable desktop it plans to release in Japan this fall. The computer allows users to view 3D images with the aid of polarized glasses, and is expected to cost $100 to $200 more than non-3D versions of the system.
Market Watch notes that NEC is the first manufacturer to make a full-scale entry into the 3D personal computer market, although competitor Asustek is expected to launch a 3D desktop later this year.
This is not NEC's first entry into personal 3D. The company offered a 3D capable laptop in 2004, which Japan Today reports was hampered by its high price and lack of available content.
