"It's roll up our sleeves and get it done," said Cheryl Madeson, marketing manager for Kiosk Information Systems.
She says the company's project timelines have shrunk from up to 18 months to as few as two to three months from start to finish. She adds that much of the high-speed deployment seems to be taking place in the retail sector.
Bryan Fairfield, vice president of sales for Nanonation, says the software solutions provider has seen a similar uptick in development speed over the past few years. He attributes the change to educational efforts that self-service developers have been pursuing with clients for years.
"Three years ago, when someone decided to go forward with a project, they had to ‘steal' the funding from elsewhere in the [client company's] budget," he said, explaining that much of his role involved educating clients on kiosk applications and potential uses. "Today, [clients] have identified budgets for projects like this and they usually know what solution they want."
Self-service and kiosk-oriented projects have evolved past the "bleeding edge" experimental stage for most deployers, he says. Now, kiosks and self-service applications are understood well enough that deployment projects are less questions of "if," and more questions of "how fast."
