The adoption of a $37.9 million customs security check system has met resistance in New Zealand, according to a report from New Zealand–based news service Stuff. The report notes the country's Labor Department expressed concerns over the SmartGate border security system's ability to adapt to new biometric identification tools, such as fingerprint identification.

The argument was countered by New Zealand Cabinet officials, who argued that Australia 's decision to adopt NEO Products Group's SmartGate technology made the move a logical one for the neighboring nation.
