Self-service lets man cross country with fewer than five words

San Jose Mercury News: It was 2004 when Andy Wood, an associate professor for San Jose State University, chose to test the boundaries of self-service. His experiment: He would fly from San Jose to New York, rent a car and drive back the 3,000 miles to San Jose without saying more than 10 words a day to those he encountered. In the end, he only said five words: "Andy," "Wood," and "sauce." Self-service solutions such as motel check-in kiosks, airport boarding-pass kiosks, self-order kiosks at fast-food locations and self-service gas stations made it possible. Now Wood is promoting a new book about his experiences.
