New chip could speed transfers from digital movie kiosks to devices

Science Daily: A new chip capable of transmitting 60 Gigahertz RF signals could allow in-store kiosks to transfer movies to handheld devices in seconds. The chip, developed by the Georgia Electronic Design Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has low cost and low power consumption and could hasten the commercialization of other high-speed, short-range wireless applications, such as desktop computer setups and wireless home DVD systems. "We believe this new standard represents a major step forward," said Joy Laskar, a member of the Ecma 60 GHz standards committee and director of the Georgia Electronic Design Center (GEDC) at Georgia Tech. "Consumers could see products capable of ultra-fast short-range data transfer within two or three years."
