Add Mineta San Jose International to the growing list of airports offering the Registered Traveler program, which allows frequent travelers to use a biometric kiosk instead of going through long security lines — for a fee.

By the end of the week, the kiosks will be installed at five airports across the country. The machines, developed by General Electric's homeland security division, currently use fingerprint and retinal scanners to positively identify the traveler. Within the year, the kiosks will be able to scan footwear and fingerprints for explosives, possibly eliminating the need to remove jackets and shoes.
