More than 90 percent of customers have used self-checkout

Chicago Tribune: When the first self-checkout systems appeared in retail stores nearly 20 years ago, skeptics questioned the wisdom of expecting consumers to weigh their bananas, scan their cereal and bag their groceries themselves. The skeptics haven't disappeared, but their numbers may be dwindling.

According to a study conducted in 2005 by IHL Consulting, more than 90 percent of consumers surveyed said they had used a self-checkout lane in the previous 12 months. Self-checkout systems let consumers scan and pay for products, usually without assistance from a store employee.
