Nashville City Paper: The Nashville, Tenn., area was among the first to use self-checkout equipment at grocery stores — apparently because it was considered "a safe area" for a system in which there were some concerns about theft.

"We're the self-checkout capital of the world for grocery stores," said Greg Buzek, president of IHL Consulting Group. The Franklin, Tenn.-based analysis and consulting firm serves retailers and retail technology vendors and recently completed a survey focused on self-checkout usage and preferences.
