Financial Mail: Freed of the constraints of legacy systems, Africa's Standard Bank is going after the mass market through a joint venture with cellular network operator MTN called MTN Banking. MTN Banking is able to offer financial services to the mass market cheaper than anyone else, since consumers don't need to visit a bank branch — particularly convenient for people in rural areas. MTN has almost twice as many cellphone subscribers as Standard Bank has retail banking customers.
