Australian IT: A consortium led by smartcard vendor Keane Corp. has trumped Hong Kong 's MTR to win a $494 million smartcard rollout for Victoria 's bus, train and tram network.
 
Premier Steve Bracks announced the contract today after a nine month tender process. Victoria is the third state to award a smartcard deal, with Western Australia and NSW both in the process of deploying the technology.
 
Bracks said Melbourne commuters would have a choice of two cards: A long-life rechargeable smartcard for regular travelers and a disposable smartcard for occasional users of public transport.
