California moves to limit RFID restrictions

WASHINGTON TECHNOLOGY: The California Assembly next week will begin considering a partial ban on radio frequency identification that would allow the technology to be used for certain types of identification cards but only if shield devices and other privacy protections are employed.

The legislation is an amended version of a California Senate bill (SB 682) that was approved May 16 that would bar all California public agencies from issuing ID cards containing RFID tags. It is the first legislation in the country that would prohibit uses of the RFID technology in identification documents.
