BofA prepares for five weeks of ATM downtime

Boston Herald: Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America boasts that it has the largest ATM network, with 16,700 ATMs, and the most widely used online-banking system in the country. But because of a glitch, around 40,000 accounts will have their ATM cards, Web access and automated phone banking blocked for five full weeks this summer for a computer system upgrade.

The bank said May 17 that a lockdown will hit selected customers with multiple accounts, mostly across the old Fleet network in the Northeast. It's the result of the changeover of former FleetBoston computer systems.

The lockdownÂ isÂ expected toÂ run from June 16 to July 25.
