CAPE TOWN, South Africa and BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Global ATM Security Alliance has opened an online library of ATM fraud, according to a news release. The library is an enhancement of Cognito, GASA's global ATM crime data management system.
The library will contain crime trend reports, white papers, articles and news releases, and will only be accessible to registered Cognito users.
"Cognito should not just be seen as a storehouse for crime data, but needs to supply value-added services like global fraud alerts, crime trend reports, countermeasures and security solutions for specific ATM crimes, as well as informative reading material," said Mike Lee, ATMIA's chief executive and founder of GASA. "Only by bringing together quantitative data and qualitative information will Cognito succeed in helping security practitioners, law enforcement agencies and other users gain the big picture of ATM crime."
GASA's executive committee also gave Cognito permission to record POS and ATM fraud. Since debit cards can be compromised at modified POS devices and then used to withdraw funds at ATMs, it is vital for GASA to monitor crime trends at both POS and ATM terminals.
"Extending Cognito's capability to watch changes in both ATM and POS crime will help our new (ATMIA) Debit Council to reach one of its major goals of organizing a consortium to compile and disseminate worldwide debit card fraud statistics," said Lyle Elias, an ATMIA founding director. "Our overall mission in the ATMIA Debit Council is to enable debit card issuers and related businesses to collectively address non-competitive common industry issues."
