PADERBORN, Germany — Wincor Nixdorf is introducing what it calls the eLock Banking Service for cash systems, an electronic safe lock that works without mechanical keys combined with a security software package that generates an encrypted unlocking code and transmits it by telephone or SMS text message to the cash-in-transit courier on site.
According to a news release, the one-time code is valid for a set period of time, after which it ceases to work. Together with a four-digit personal PIN number like that of an ATM card, the technician enters the unlocking code via a keypad on the lock. The lock then unscrambles the unlocking code, compares the user PIN, the serial number of the lock and the time information and, if all the data is in order, opens the safe lock, thus obviating the need for keys and all the administration that goes with them.
Acting as service provider, Wincor Nixdorf assumes responsibility for the entire key management discipline in respect of the relevant ATMs, thus ensuring easy, unhindered access for replenishment and repairs.
The service has already been introduced successfully in Germany, according to the release.
