CAPE TOWN, S.A. and Brookings, S.D. — In a time when card skimming has become the number-one crime in the ATM industry, the Global ATM Security Alliance (GASA) has announced the publication of its Best Practice Manual for PIN Security and Key Management.
"PIN security is the cornerstone of ATM security, period," Mike Lee, founder of GASA and CEO of the ATM Industry Association, said in a news release. "These international guidelines incorporate the very latest payments industry joint requirements."
The manual forms part of a series of best practice manuals covering the whole security lifecycle of the ATM.
"I trust the message of PIN and key security will be deepened and widened in our industry as a result of this international set of recommendations," Lee added. "Even if a debit card is skimmed but the PIN is protected the criminal can do nothing with the stolen card data."
