JACKSONVILLE, FL--Some Florida ATMs are being fitted with devices that allow users to notify police of a crime in progress, reports firstcoastnews.com.
The makers of the devices are capitalizing on the fact that while cameras--installed on most machines--may be helpful after the fact, they do nothing to intervene as a criminal act occurs.
Lawrence Steelman is marketing a 911 button for ATMs which when pushed instantly summons law enforcement. Sales of the dialer, however, are being hindered owing to its $1,000 cost. "Banks do want it, but they’re not willing to spend the money," Steelman said.
Zi-cubed is another option for ATM customer safety. It’s a reverse pin system. If an ATM user has trouble, he or she can punch in the PIN number backward and police are alerted. This option is cheaper; it costs about $25.
JSO detectives said the devices would be helpful.
"Even if we only captured one or two because of the system that may prevent dozens of robberies," said Detective Greg Strickland.
