SYDNEY — NCR Australia has introduced a new ATM which, the company says, will guard against attacks in which people try to physically smash the machine and steal cash.
Dean Talbot, business development manager of NCR's Financial Services dvision, said the Cash4all ATM is housed within a fiberglass "pod" which could serve both as protection from the elements and also provide real estate for advertising.
According to a report in The Age, Cash4all can be used outdoors and does not have to go through a hole in the wall, which means reduced costs. It is bolted to the ground and thus requires a concrete base.
The ATM uses ink-staining technology from NCR subsidiary Fluiditi. If a physical attack is detected, indelible ink is released under high pressure, staining all the notes inside and rendering them worthless.
The machine uses a Windows XP Professional operating system and is equipped with wireless communications, which allows it to be moved from location to location with relative ease.
Talbot said the mechanism which releases ink can be turned off when the ATM is being shifted from location to location.
