PERTH, Australia -- Foodland Association Limited (FAL) has launched Australia's first trial of NCR FastLane self-checkout technology.
The NCR FastLane pilot will run for six months at FAL's Action grocery store in Mirrabooka, Perth. If the trial is a success, FAL will consider integrating the self-checkout technology in other stores, according to a news release.
FAL's General Manager of information technology Paul Trent said, "Our willingness to invest in this technology will mean greater choice and improved service for our customers. And it will create a real point of difference in our grocery supermarket business."
A recent NCR-sponsored survey conducted by analyst firm IDC of consumers in five countries, including 1,200 in Australia, shows 70 percent said they would be likely to use self-checkout if it was available in their stores and supermarkets.
FAL is one of Australia's largest public companies with supermarkets in Western Australia, Queensland, northern New South Wales and New Zealand. The organization employs more than 28,000 people in both countries and its annual sales are in excess of $6 billion.
