Maryland motorists will soon use kiosks to avoid long lines when renewing their tags. However, Indiana drivers are losing access to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles' 55 self-service terminals.
"As part of our overall effort to improve security and efficiency, the self-service terminals are no longer available at BMV license branches," said Dennis Rosebrough of the IBMV in a story published on theindychannel.com.
He also said the number of people who used the kiosks to renew license plates was a tiny percentage of the agency's total customer base.
However, Buel Young of the Motor Vehicle Administration in Maryland, expects the state's drivers to embrace tag-renewing kiosks. According to The Baltimore Sun, the agency already provides 70 percent of its "clean" renewals through sources other than office counters. The change is a move to nudge the other 30 percent in a more efficient direction.
"We're always trying to cut down our wait times," Young said.
