• Kiosks reaching for 'the cloud'

IN Media Corp. today announced the launch of its high-definition kiosk. CEO Nick Karnik predicts the Google Android 2.2 touch-screen kiosks will save retailers money without compromising customer service because all functions are supported via "the cloud" through an Internet connection.

"We have created an improved marketing and sales tool that will allow consumers and vendors the benefit of instant response and expanded information delivery," said Karnik, whose company developed the Android 2.2 using its Internet Protocol Television cloud technology.

The solution is IN Media's first kiosk design. Its main role had previously been as an integrator of Internet IPTV services and content for major platform and service providers.

The kiosks have bar code and credit card scanners, touch-screen interfaces, browser support and Android applications for use in hotels, theaters, airports, train stations, hospitals, grocery stores, banks and malls. All functions run with little or no hardware, which explains the cost savings.

"Displayed content can be changed instantly as the HD screen is fed new information, Karnik said. "The need for a full-blown computer CPU is eliminated, reducing costs and space issues. All the expensive logistic issues, where you need a proper connection are taken care of. Without all that hardware, naturally the price goes down.

Karnik's kiosks allow retail stores to offer their own in-store TV channels and also give consumers interactivity options, such as conducting product searches, via an HDTV touch screen.

IN Media has launched its kiosks in China and plans to bring them to the United States this summer.
