According to the Tri-City Herald in Kennewick, Wash., body-scanning technology just like that used to screen airline passengers has now been licensed to a company that plans to develop the scanner to help shoppers find better-fitting and more-flattering clothing.
The technology, developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., has been licensed by Battelle to Unique Solutions Ltd., according to the newspaper report. The tech may also be used to track fitness gains, according to the story:
Unique Solutions already has launched the service at the largest retail shopping mall in the United States, King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania.
Shoppers step into a kiosk for scanning and then are told which styles of the largest brand name clothing lines are likely to fit the best and be the most flattering. There is no charge for the sizing service.
Unique Solutions plans to expand the service with kiosks across the nation.
The system also may be used to compile body measurements for consumers who want to track their fitness and health goals.
