About 100 key-making kiosks are already deployed throughout big-box stores, including Lowe's and Wal-Mart, across 15 states. Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., minuteKEY has attracted $10.6 million in private equity funding so far and is planning to eventually have 20,000 kiosks across the country.
How it works
The kiosk uses computer technology to make near-perfect duplicates of house or office keys, according to the company's website. Users don't have to know what type of key they have. After placing the order through the touchscreen and inserting the key he wants duplicated, the user pays via credit or debit card.
CEO Randall Fagundo said he expects to hire another 20 software developers and other employees to keep up with company growth over the next six months.
