Canadian retailers are embracing kiosks, hoping to increase sales for DVD rentals as well as a variety of other products, according to Metro News Canada.
Although kiosks are popular in other countries, including Japan and the United States, where kiosks dispense everything from fresh meat and electronics to purses and DVDs, Canadian businesses have been slower to embrace the trend. It's now testing DVD rentals in kiosks, which may have something to do with Blockbuster Video selling all its Canadian assets last year. Also, Rogers Communications, another popular video chain, recently announced plans to exit the physical rental business.
"That leaves a billion dollars worth of business open in Canada," Jim Gormley, the former head of Jumbo Video, who has now launched a kiosk business called Planet DVD in the Toronto area, said in the story.
Best Buy Canada is also getting on the kiosk bandwagon. It deployed six kiosk machines at Toronto Pearson International Airport that sell about 60 electronics, including headphones, e-books and iPads.
