India continues its move toward self-service with the recent unveiling of the touchscreen passenger-operated Add Value Machine, which allows Delhi Metro smart card users to recharge their cards via an automated kiosk.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) installed the first kiosk at the Central Secretariat metro station, according to the dailypioneer.com. The machine is connected to the existing Fare Collection System of DMRC and can be monitored from the station or at the Operation Control Centre, the article reported. Depending on passenger response, more kiosks will be rolled out following the trial period.
"The machine can accept the bank note and the smart card will get recharged. After every successful recharge, it will generate a receipt showing total balance in the card after adding value and physical ID number of the card. This receipt will help passengers in case of any dispute during 'Add Value' process. Currently, it can only accept Rs 100 notes and one note at a time. However, this can be changed to other denominations as per user response in coming months," a DMRC spokesperson said in the article.
