Gardermoen Airport in Oslo, Norway, has begun processing international travelers' passports through the use of a self-service biometric passport control system. According to tnp.no, processing with the EasyPASS gate started yesterday with travelers over the age of 18 using the system.
The EasyPASS technology is based on facial recognition and has a two-stage operation, the article reported. After passing the first gate, the traveler's face is scanned with a height-adjustable camera and compared with the picture on the passport. After the image match is completed, the next door is opened and the border control finishes, with the entire process taking about 15 seconds.
Currently the system is only processing Norwegian adults, but will eventually extend to travelers from the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, according to the article.
