U.K. retail chain Tesco is piloting a "magical" augmented reality mirror and digital mannequin in several locations, according to digitalartsonline.co.uk.
The stores involved in the pilot are equipped with digital signage that advertises the various clothing available through its F&F line, and a self-service touchscreen kiosk that customers can use to browse and make purchases using chip-and-pin, the article reported.
Developed by Retec Interface, the kiosk extends the shoppers' experience beyond the store to products available online. Items can be purchased and scheduled for home delivery, or unavailable sizes can be located and purchased. The kiosk also allows customers to use a barcode scanner for product ratings, reviews and suggested accessories. The goal of the new technology is to enhance the shopping experience for Tesco customers and provide insight for Tesco staff into how customers are interacting with the products, the article reported.
Along with the kiosk, the Kids StyleMe Mirror is also in testing. Created by C In-Store, the mirror uses augmented reality to overlay the customer's image with pictures of clothing they select using a gesture-based interface.
"We've now started to understand, by looking at stock data, that accessories are very big in terms of the appetite for our kiosk. That's answering questions for the business, indicating that we should have more accessories in stock," said Situl Thakrar, head of online development operations for clothing at Tesco. "The heart of the retail experience will remain as it is, but we are trying to enhance the experience. This is now an alternative way to look for something suitable and be inspired by what we have to offer."
